Not recommended Posted August 23, 2025 on Steam In my opinion, this game was a treasure from A1 up to around A16, even with horrible graphics and performance. Now, it’s a horrible game with great graphics. Examples of changes over time: From: Find sand, make a glass bottle (Or find one), put dirty water in it, boil it, drink! To: Find smoothies or water in any container! From: Harvest trees to improve your lumberjack skill, use a bow to improve your archery skill! To: Kill zombie and search for a specific book in any container to increase your skill! From: Wear clothing to avoid heatstroke or frostbite depending on the biome! To: Your immortal bro, no clothing needed! Oh wait… instead, you need to do repetitive quest to get a badge for it!? From: Don’t carry too much meat on you, zombies can smell it! To: Zombies can detect you immediately, even in a deep underground base with nothing in it! From: Find materials to make a forge, put something in it, and start crafting useful items! (Find schematics for advanced items) To: Kill zombies or do repetitive quest to learn how to make a forge ! From: Dig a huge pit so zombies fall in and you can finish them off at the bottom! To: Zombies can fall from 100m without taking any damage! From: Oh! We have to wait for the concrete to dry before adding another layer or upgrade! To: Who cares? Just drop it all in, it’s all fine! From: Find or craft a spade, turn the soil, plant, water, harvest! To: Here’s a special block — put seeds in it and done! From: Play a sandbox survival game to progress! To: Complete repetitive quests for everything! Here’s another list of removed features over the years (from Blue’s review): -Odors or sounds that attract zombies -Hot/Cold weather system -Adjustable body sliders for character creation -Gore blocks -Individual clothing items (e.g., T-shirts, jeans, beanies, boots — instead of generic “Padded Outfit”) -Refillable jars of water -5 upgrade material types -Specific gun parts (e.g., AK-47 receiver instead of generic “Weapon Parts”) -Crafting quality higher than 6 -Zombie types: Behemoth, Cowboy, Football Player, Cheerleader, and more -Log spikes that deal damage -XP from crafting (strange to remove in a survival crafting game) -Combining items to improve their quality -“Learn by Doing” (aka Skyrim leveling) -Individual vehicle parts -and so much more...!!! Oh yea, they added weapon mod, this one was cool ! And I haven't mentioned all the possible technical abuses in PvP/PVE that have been ignored for years making building almost obsolete... every one live in a hole (Which can be easily detected) untils they reach almost max level after hundreds of hours of farming repetitive quest, to finaly build a square filled tower looking like s**t (and impossible to raid using methods that freeze the game near it.) So i do not recommend that game anymore ! -
Not recommended Posted February 21, 2026 on Steam I used to like this game. Note that key word there, though. Used to. Then the Devs started messing with it. Starting changing things around because people were 'trivializing' things. "Oh, people are settling near water! That trivializes water gathering! Fine, NO MORE gathering water in jars, you just eat the jars like Stardew!" - News flash, Devs, people have settled near water literally since before we were even humans. That's a basic part of survival, and you're mad about people doing it in a 'Survival' game. "Oh no, people are trivializing our horde nights by having elaborate bases or underground bases! Exploder Zombies! No Real Traps! You should be running SCARED on Horde Night!" - Again, people have done those things since time immemorial to survive dangerous situations. "People are just running into new biomes willy nilly! They're supposed to go IN ORDER! Fine, each biome gives a DEBUFF and you solve it by drinking a SMOOTHIE!" - Setting aside the inherent silliness of smoothies somehow curing smoke inhalation, there are better ways to handle this stuff. Note the common thread among these, however: The devs set a nasty challenge, the players figured out the best way to beat it, and the devs got huffy and removed it or nerfed it. In a survival game, your goal is to survive. Part of that is emergent gameplay trends and meta. And by the by, Devs? On the off-chance you ever read this...it would make more sense to stall smoke inhalation by wetting down a handkerchief. -
Not recommended Posted July 24, 2025 on Steam It is abundantly clear; whoever has been in charge of the development management needs to go. They are not interested in this genre of game. 7Days has had as much development time as Rust, and the difference is night and day. Badges are ridiculous. Removing survival mechanics like food/water, water collection, wetness, cold, etc. Changing from a "use skill to develop skill" to a "find books to improve skill" system. Consistently breaking working things, to replace them with half-baked concepts, to then try to patch in solutions for fixes and changes that were never needed. Complete refusal to just work on the core fundamentals of what the game is (Sandbox, *SURVIVAL*) It's all indicative of awful decision making, and if there's ANYONE left at Fun Pimps who actually gives a ♥♥♥♥ about trying to make this game fun after over a DECADE of stagnation, they need to stand up right now and take the lead away from whoever is making these ridiculous decisions. -
Recommended Posted February 6, 2026 on Steam This was my Dad's favourite game. Unfortunately we lost him just before Xmas from cancer. Was still playing at age 74. I bought this for him way back around alpha 10/11 to play some MP with myself and some friends, and while we burned out he kept going with almost 3k hours. So it's a thumbs up from me if only due to the memory of walking past his PC to see how his base was coming along etc. He knew more about the game than I did. So thanks for the memories. Cheers -
Recommended Posted December 15, 2025 on Steam With its more recent updates, 7 Days to Die feels like a game that’s still unsure of what it wants its core experience to be. While the developers continue to rework major systems in the name of balance and accessibility, the end result is a gameplay loop that, at least for me, has become far less enjoyable than it used to be. Many of the latest updates focus heavily on restructuring progression and perks, pushing players into a more guided, almost checklist driven experience. Early and mid game progression now feels slower and more restrictive, with fewer meaningful choices and less room to experiment with different playstyles. Instead of naturally discovering tools, weapons, and crafting paths through exploration and risk taking, progression feels increasingly artificial and gamified. The quest system and trader focus exemplify this problem. Recent changes encourage a loop of accepting jobs, clearing prefabs, returning to traders, and repeating the process. While functional, this loop quickly becomes repetitive and starts to overshadow survival, base building, and emergent gameplay. Scavenging and exploration once the heart of the experience now feel secondary to running errands for NPCs. Combat and horde nights have also been affected by ongoing balance passes. Zombie behavior and pathing changes often feel less organic and more like puzzle solving against predictable AI rules. Base design has shifted from creative fortification to exploiting systems, and when those systems are inevitably changed again in a future update, entire playstyles are invalidated. While the developers’ commitment to updates is commendable, the constant reworks make it hard to invest long term. Each major update feels less like refinement and more like a reset, and it’s increasingly difficult to tell whether feedback is shaping a clearer vision or just prompting another overhaul. In its current state, 7 Days to Die isn’t a bad game but it is one I no longer enjoy playing. The modern gameplay loop feels repetitive, overly structured, and at odds with the sandbox survival experience that originally drew me in. For new players, the current design may feel streamlined and accessible. For returning players like myself, it feels like the soul of the game has been slowly sanded down with every update. -
Not recommended Posted July 7, 2025 on Steam I've been holding off from giving a review just to wait and see how the fun pimps would work on this game. Every update for me up until alpha 21 were fine. Gameplay loops changed, stuff was added and taken away, but it was still fun. I think Alpha 20 was probably the perfect balance between each playstyle someone could get out of this game. Then alpha 21 hits, new pois, updated pois and some cool new stuff added. But the gameplay loop was changed again to fit 1 playstyle and that was looting and trader quests. Everything was revolved around reading books to level up skills which took out the more rpg styled levelling system in alpha 20. May have just been me as well, but the colour scheme and some textures looked off to me but i figured, maybe it'll make more sense with a few more updates. Then 1.0 hit, i thought finally the game is done can't wait to see all the cool new stuff we'll get now. (Just as an fyi, I'm an original kickstarter backer so i had high hops they've at least added what they promised would be in a 1.0 release). Surprise surprise, not only have they not fully completed the game based on their kickstarter promises, they changed the gameplay loop again! This time taking out certain items and recipes like water bottles to favour water dew collectors. They have also taken out full character customisation, along with all the clothing items you could get for outfits and a basic face changer. Fair enough it looks a lot nicer now, but it took out the more personalised feel with a character you could play as. Furthermore i noticed after they started adding cosmetic dlc, which was probably the real reason they took this away so they could take more money. Then you had 1.4, they missed their goals for the new roadmap they had and this update was more a lead up to the stuff that should've already been added in from 1.0. Time goes on and things are still looking slow. Now we have 2.0 storm brewing. Gameplay loop once again changed. Now you can't just waltz into any biome you want as you now have quests to gain the right to build and explore there or else you constantly lose health and gain debuffs to go there. (I understand you can turn off certain features of this new loop but that isn't the point). It's not even the same game now, it's a worse more annoying version of what it was supposed to be. A sandbox tower defence zombie game, with rpg elements. To a fetch quest, read book simulator with sandbox tower defence elements. I honestly don't know what has happened to the fun pimps over the years but they have clearly lost all passion in their game and are now just trying to annoy old and recurring players with each update. I remember checking out their 1.0 update stream ages ago and even then they just sounded tired and bored of their own game. In it's current state and as an opinion of the devs themselves, i cannot recommend this game. If you are to buy and play this you'd be better off playing any update before alpha 21, or play with one of the many overhaul mods that are currently available. 7 days have passed on this game and any hope i have for it has died. I hope the devs are one day able to find the passion they had when the game was first teased over 10 years ago. Because until then, i will not have any hope in any of their future updates or new projects they may come up with. Sorry for the long review. Thank you for taking the time to read.
