Recommended Posted February 25, 2026 on Steam UPDATE: Another patch just dropped that fixed the speed in battles. Along with this, there seems to be a weird screen tearing issue, but I fixed it by switching from fullscreen to borderless windowed. With the speed in battles fixed, this is pretty much just a SLIGHTLY better version of the previous port. I do appreciate the in-game settings menu and addition of Steam trading cards and points shop. It's also the exact same price as the version this replaced, so no harm there. An unfortunate first day for this port as I'm sure none of these issues were intentional but I'm glad Square jumped to fix issues as quick as they did. TL:DR it's okay and is just a little better than what we already had -
Not recommended Posted February 25, 2026 on Steam disappointing. one of my favourite games and i still have a positive review on the original steam release but they've messed up with the latest update. whoever this got outsourced to learned nothing from the failures of the 2013 steam release which required weeks of rushed patches to get it to a playable state. for some reason, they've removed the 2013 steam release and replaced it with this version. it still has a launcher for configuration, but now there's a weird emulator-style overlay for configuring options in game. it's got 2 different control panels just like nu-windows - this is how you know they don't care. the presentation is not good. this was their chance to fix the horrific 15/30/60 fps scenario that the original release had and somehow they've made it even worse. battles run way too fast but even though i'm sure they'll revert it eventually, it just shows their lack of care for this "new" game. it's not just the framerate, everything looks like it's been upscaled with ai or hq4x. all of the fonts and textures either need a second pass by an actual artist or reverted asap. genuinely just no idea why they did this. the new version doesn't even add any content except for timed autosave and cheat codes. not even fun little cheat codes like "big head mode". there's only pointless journalist mode cheats like "infinite hp" to remove the game from the game. people have asked why the game's storage requirements tripled. i looked into it and wrote out my problems with the update's optimisation in reddit format:

French fields + ending cutscene + launcher font: 301MB German fields + ending cutscene + launcher font: 298MB Spanish fields + ending cutscene + launcher font: 295MB Japanese fields + ending cutscene + launcher font: 295MB The only difference between the fields is the text and the only difference between the ending cutscene is the subtitles. The new launcher + overlay is 200MB because every string of text is a PNG file. They store an image of every keyboard key and controller button in 5 languages. If they cared, they could have saved a gigabyte right there just using softsubs and sane i18n. The largest folder in the game is the music folder at 822MB. This is just Ogg recordings of the PS1 version but each song is looped 2-3 times over because presumably they couldn't figure out how to do seamless looping in-engine. If they cared, they could have just fixed this and used a newer audio codec to save 400MB+. If they really cared, they could have just used the original midis with a PS1 soundfont to do the same thing more accurately in <4MB. The new music is noticeably higher quality than the previous Steam release, but that version didn't have this looping issue, which explains why the new music is nearly 4x larger than the old one (222MB). The second largest folder is the language-agnostic FMVs at 686MB. The original 2012 Matroska encodes aren't bad (if they cared, they could have re-encoded them from source using a codec from this decade). The new credits roll has both a 1080p and 720p version for some reason, totaling 118MB. Almost 20% of the new version's FMVs folder storage is just the new credits roll. I'm not sure why they're 16:9 either when the rest of the videos are in 4:3. Steam actually has a feature to only download language packs for the user's specified languages but why would they bother setting that up when the player's storage is free? tl;dr the original Steam release only had English and they couldn't be bothered actually adding language support to the game so they just rebundled the assets from every game version and shipped it as a new game.

This is my main issue with it. They made this spectacle of updating the game and then didn't actually update the game. I was preparing myself for Steam workshop support, a redone EN translation, HFR/HDR support or anything that would actually make it worth hard-forking the current Steam release for modding/speedrun compatibility reasons. What we got was botched localization tripling the game's file size, built-in cheats, framerate issues and nothing else I can see that actually justifies releasing an entirely new game on Steam. Some outsourced porting studio probably just got a payday because Square Enix publishing doesn't know about Steam's versioning feature.

EDIT: reply to comments telling me that i can still play the good version: the fact that i still have access to the game that i paid for in 2013 isn't a bonus, nor does it help people who buy the game today. nobody has left a comment explaining why this new (worse) game actually exists and why it couldn't have been a beta branch or a launcher option. it's not as egregious as what take2 did with "grand theft auto defective edition" but as a fan of the game, the total lack of care is disappointing. there's an entire community of people maintaining the game for free while some yahoos with FIVE PEOPLE credited as "quality assurance" and all the time in the world couldn't re-release a game which was already working. the project was completed in december and they needed 2 patches after release in february to even make the first chapter beatable. the fact that the new outsourced developers had the brass balls to add themselves to ff7's credits as "designers" is mind boggling. this is one of the most critically acclaimed video games ever made. it's embarrassing. SE doesn't read or respond to english feedback anyway so none of these opinions even matter. the review score will eventually reach positive while modders and people who actually care about the game will continue to mod and maintain it like every other abandoned pc game. i'm pleasantly surprised that my rant got so much attention but nothing will ever happen. -
Not recommended Posted February 24, 2026 on Steam oh my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ god bilinear filtering is so ugly i'd just play the 2013 version without glasses on if i wanted the game to look like this -
Not recommended Posted March 25, 2026 on Steam Why delist a previous version especially if you do absolutely nothing with the re-released version and leave it a buggy mess? Are you just attacking the mod community, your fans, that keep your game alive and your business? Are you jealous they do a better job then you have been doing to update the true classics? Absolutely no reason to delist a game and get/trick people to buy multiple copies of the same game. -
Not recommended Posted April 21, 2026 on Steam Pros : -The stupid old launcher that forced you to make a SE account is gone forever -Much better controller support out of the box, including proper glyphs Neutral : -There's some built-in cheats, if you're into that. -STILL can't launch directly into the game, the old launcher was just replaced with a new one. At least this one is inoffensive and it actually responds to controller input so it doesn't ruin the Big Picture experience, but still feels kinda unnecessary. Cons : -There's a bug with the sound effects, first time players probably won't notice but anyone that has played the game before will be able to tell right after the first battle. This bug's been there since launch and at this point is very unlikely it'll ever be patched out. -There's a forced graphics filter applied to the picture, whether you like it or not is relative but there's no excuse for offering no option to just turn it off. -Most likely you're gonna have to jump through hoops to get any of the older mods working -There's no other improvements to justify a re-release, no 60FPS, no wide screen, no higher res models, nothing. Conclusion : If you got this for free like me because you had the older version, good. If you're a new player, can't recommend, SE did the bare minimum here and won't even fix basic issues people have been complaining about. -
Not recommended Posted February 25, 2026 on Steam - All fields, FMV's and textures are blurry due to a non optional filter. - Sound effects that loop now stutter (The exp bar for example after a fight). - The unnecessary launcher uses sound effects from a completely different game (FF8). - That same launcher can also be interacted with THROUGH your other windows somehow. - Setting the resolution in the launcher doesn't actually change your resolution, you need to change it via the new in-game escape menu. - Game released with no game, literally. You downloaded nothing... - Battles were super speed up on launch for no reason. They didn't test it at all, they just made it worse and increased the price. I wouldn't trust whoever ported this to look after my dog for an hour.
