Recommended Posted February 23, 2026 on Steam
Amazing First Half, Rushed Second Half

First Impressions
I really enjoyed my time with High on Life, 3 years ago. It was such a unique and great game. No need to repeat myself on that game, I have already mentioned it in my review back in the day. So, I was very excited for High on Life 2 since it was announced last year. I enjoyed my time with it again, even though it was underwhelming at parts. Let me explain. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3668466254
Amazing Opening Chapters
The game starts off with a superb creative prologue. Then the first tutorial level is okay as well. But I was not very impressed yet. That changed with the Larry Pinkstock mission on the yacht. Oh, such a well tailored mission. The way we meet Travis and the time we spend with him, both so fun and so well presented. Then, there is a really cool detective work part which is the best hour I have spent in the game, and the rest of the yacht sequence is just as great. I am very impressed by the game at the end of the bounty. Then we move on to the next bounty, the Senator Muppy Doo chapter. We visit a convention called Con-Con that has some different conventions we get to visit. All the conventions we visit, the level design, the writing, and the pacing in this mission are so peak. And the final boss fight of Con-Con is just the best boss in the game, hands down. At this point, I am thinking High on Life is a Game of the Year contender for me, and should definitely win some awards if the game keeps up at this level of quality. Unfortunately, it doesn't.
Later Bounties and Drop in Quality
The third bounty (Finance Wiz) is okay, not bad, not great. Way less effort got into it but still, it was cool. The next, the Cult bounty chapter, is just very low effort from this team. The fourth bounty is a joke bounty, it takes like 10 seconds. The fifth, Professor Jane Berkel, is fun in the prison part, but the rest is still very low effort. And the final bounty chapter is just 1 to 5 mixed and sent to you, with a very generic boss at the end, where you use your guns' abilities in order with zero creativity and that's it. The game just couldn't keep the quality of the first 2 chapters. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3668752673
Writing, Design, and Characters
Look, when you take away the cautiously crafted writing, presentation, the environments, and the level design from this game, it's just a generic shooter. That's what the first game avoided, and the first 2 chapters even passed beyond that. But the rest of the game is just repetitive and, as I said, low effort, and definitely not as funny or fresh as the first game. It's as if the studio developed the first chapters with high attention to detail and then they said, enough. We have to ship this early next year, so rush it up. Very unfortunately, it feels like that to me. Don't get me wrong, the rest is still fine with some good moments in between, but it's just not the same quality. I loved Travis though, such a cool and likeable character, great writing and character design on that part. His relationship with Jan is really fun to watch. The skateboard is fun to play and control, it adds to the combat, but in a game about interactions with NPCs, that doesn't seem like a good choice since you just slide past them now. That seems contrary to the game design of what made High on Life amazing. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3668754646
Technical Problems
The technical part of the game is very troubled. Optimization seems really bad. I was able to play it smoothly, but I can tell something is wrong. There is something wrong with the graphics from time to time. Especially outdoors, the lighting really doesn't look good and the game looks very dark sometimes. I am not a graphics nerd, but something bothers me about this game's visuals sometimes. The first game looked crisper, more colorful, and better lit. Also, I have experienced 3 crashes.
Final Thoughts
Still, I have enjoyed my time with High on Life 2. And I would love to see them come up with a third game, or something fresh. Dear management team at Squanch Games, please give these guys the budget and the time. They really have the potential to cook up something amazing.
SILVER MEDAL
Follow My Curator Page For More Reviews ⚜️ -
Not recommended Posted March 26, 2026 on Steam I'm a big fan of Squanch Games, I loved High on Life and Trover Saves the Universe and I love this game too but... Just not in it's current state. Here's just some of the issues I've encountered: - Skipped Dialogue: I've missed at least 25% of the character dialogue because everyone is constantly interrupting each other, so many people never finish what they were saying when interrupted and it cannot be heard again. - No Autosaves or backups: One autosave is simply not enough. I've already had to restart the entire game once because the autosave spawns me out of bounds and into immediate unavoidable death. - Serious Graphical Glitches: Every time I play this game I struggle with the inconsistent visuals. 75% of the time it works great.... The times it does not however result in graphical errors so bad that a game restart is required. I'd advise epileptics to tread carefully when playing this as these errors can happen any time. The most annoying and dangerous of these so far is when the objective guide fails and it causes the display to flicker like mad. - Softlocks, god the softlocks: I softlock at the end of bosses, I softlock during character dialogue, hell it softlocks in half of every puzzle I play. I'm constantly having to look up the answers to said puzzles to check to see if they are working as intended. I've wasted more time than I would have liked looking for the answers for puzzles that I've already solved. - Constant crashes and poor performance: The game crashes at least once every 2 hours. It also isn't nearly as optimised as the first game. I play on Low-Medium even though I have a decent system. I never expected to play the game on ultra at 100FPS, I just wanted something a bit better than what I got. Even on my reduced settings I get constant frame drops, it sometimes even below 20FPS. Please don't think this is me hating on the game. I love this title and series. The story, visuals and gameplay are incredible, I just don't think this game is finished. Please put it in early access until you've patched the technical issues, Squanch games. -
Not recommended Posted February 14, 2026 on Steam Crashes like crazy on a high end system 5070 ti/ Ryzen 7 9800X3D/ 32gb DDR5 RAM/ I'm sorry I'm just not supporting games that release in this state. "Oh it's only day 1, they'll fix it in a few weeks" the gaming industry was never like that! Never in my life did I ever remember returning a PS1/PS2 game to the store. When a game was released and alpha/beta tested it was released so that I could play from start to finish with minimal issues. But I can't even get past the first level without fatal crashes. Drivers are all up to date and bios is up to date. -
Recommended Posted February 13, 2026 on Steam Good game so far but like the previous high on life the release version is pretty poorly optimized seeing significant frame drops and stutters. personally I would wait a few weeks until they sort this games optimization before purchasing 20th Feb Edit: The recent update that's been released by squanch games has significantly improved my frame rates and I've been able to raise my texture quality to high and still have around 140 FPS. Where before the update I was running medium settings and was lucky to reach 110 FPS -
Not recommended Posted February 14, 2026 on Steam Very poorly optimized for a $60 product. Was excited to play but refunded because of the poor performance.
