Recommended Posted September 2, 2025 on Steam A masterpiece with an incredible story, atmosphere, and gameplay elements that were very innovative for its time. The soundtrack is iconic and fits the game perfectly. The bosses all have unique personalities, each with their own gameplay mechanics that make every fight memorable. I played it on Steam Deck, and while some bosses were a bit harder to beat on this platform, the experience was still very good, so I also recommend playing it there. A must play game ! -
Recommended Posted February 4, 2026 on Steam I never knew about the Metal Gear Solid games until one of my friends gifted me the master collection (THANK YOU DAVID!!!). He recommended the franchise to me and told me how great the games and the stories in the games are. I am almost done playing through MGS1 for the first time and I am absolutely blown away with everything this game has to offer. The story is so incredible, the boss fights are truly challenging, the characters are absolutely phenomenal. This game is amazing on the Steam Deck too! The game design is truly amazing for a 1998 video game, and I am absolutely excited to play the rest of the metal gear solid games. When I first started playing, I was worried I wouldn't be able to get into the game mainly due to the older graphics and camera angles of the game, however, that quickly changed the further I progressed into the game. Solid Snake is such an interesting character, and you get to see how his character progresses and changes throughout the story as you experience the events throughout the game.. I love the codec also! It allows you to interact with several different characters, get in-game hints, and of course, Mei Ling! You will never forget Mei Ling! I am jealous of everyone who grew up playing this on the PS1, but I am greatful that I get to experience this masterpiece in 2026! -
Not recommended Posted December 8, 2025 on Steam
PSA:
https://www.gog.com/en/game/metal_gear_solid + https://mgs.w00ty.com/mgs1/launcher/ <-- Get this version instead with the launcher! Please! The GOG release is much better, and it's HALF the price! I may only have a few minutes logged into this release, but combined with the 3.0.0 patch notes, it's really all I needed to come to the conclusion that I'm sharing here. The Master Collection version of MGS1 (which I'll be labeling the "Master release" for the rest of this review) is a straight up emulation of the original game. **By default it uses the original square aspect ratio, but you can stretch it to a 16 by 9 ratio after the version 3.0.0 drop which makes the game look very ugly looking. **The game would normally run at the original low resolution, but if you choose to go for a higher resolution in settings, the game applies texture filtering which looks incredibly weird. If combined with a fix mod like ones for the other Master releases, I'm sure that part could be mitigated. The GOG Integral release I generally prefer when combined with the launcher and the patches that it can install. ** I have not played and confirmed it, I last played it before patch 3.0.0, but based on the content I've seen relating to these, it seems that these statements I made are correct. Please correct me if I am wrong so I can edit my review. Comments are enabled, you may state your opinions with this release or my review. -
Recommended Posted February 4, 2026 on Steam To get the Big Boss rank in MGS1 you must complete the game on Extreme difficulty in under 3 hours, with 0 continues, 25 or fewer kills, 4 or fewer alerts, 1 or 0 rations used, and no special items Bandana Stealth. The radar must be turned off, which is a requirement for the rank. You can get Big Boss rank easily by playing the game in Japanese There's only one difficulty setting and it's equal to the easy mode of the US version. Makes it much easier to get Big Boss rank. -
Not recommended Posted June 13, 2025 on Steam Launched it once, experienced a really sub-standard PC port. Fullscreen and resolution detection is broken, I would need to download mods to get a fullscreen fix for a freshly "remastered" version for modern Systems. I emulated my original PS1 MGS 10 years ago and had a better experience with almost the same upscaling benefits than this version offers. Refunded it after that. Sad, because MGS is still a great game, but the Master Collection is not acceptable. -
Not recommended Posted November 1, 2025 on Steam Game is great, this version isnt. Get it for 10 usd (not even) on GOG for the MGS INTEGRAL launcher, and play it in a way that deserves the "Master Collection Version" title. If you insist on burning extra money on this version, check out MGSM2fix.
