Recommended Posted February 19, 2026 on Steam Okay so, right to it. Poppy 5 comes in as the latest installment in the series, and while it is shorter than Chapter 4, it is significantly more polished. I ran into absolutely zero bugs during my playthrough. Despite this however, its not the worst chapter in the series, yet not the greatest either. The story for the most part seems to be filler, as most of the new discoveries you make aren't relevant to the main story. Not to say it isn't interesting, but I spent quite a long time just trying to power through the puzzles trying to figure out what comes next in the story. I 100% enjoyed my time with it as the puzzles were good, the exploration factor is always still on point, and a few other surprises kept me going. My entire review onward is essentially filled with spoilers so please be advised and turn away if you want to refrain from spoilers.
Like I said, I enjoyed my time with Poppy 5 but there's still quite a few things that bug me. Let's start with the new cast of characters. I like them for the most part, though my favorite new entry was definitely Lily and her dollhouse section. Or at least... visually. The two new allies are also okay, I dont have much of an opinion on them. The games story could definitely work without them, but they've proven to be interesting enough to keep around. The Insideout thingies are probably my least favorite thing here. They essentially just feel like a copy-paste of the little smiling critters with a bit more gore and unsettling designs, which (dont get me wrong) are really good, especially in a mascot horror game trying to attract a more mature audience (this fanbase is filled with children smh). But back to Lily, specifically her gameplay section. The final chase section of Lily's dollhouse was just completely unfair to any first time players. Almost none of the quick-time events give you ample time to find the next thing to do while being chased. During the entire section I only ever had about a few seconds for each section and it wasn't quite obvious what I had to do next. For instance, at the very beginning of it, I follow Kissy thinking that's what I have to do. But alas, as I follow her, Lily intercepts me immediately. A few tries later, and I realize that wasn't what I was supposed to do. The whole section is like this and it just really frustrated me. Alright, Prototypes design have been revealed and I am not so convinced. He looks cool yeah, but... a jester? Why? I'm not seeing the symbolism and I sure hope he wasn't designed just to look like another certain popular jester character from an animated YouTube series that just so happens to be... amazing. *cough cough* My point is, I would like to know why his design is that of a jester. I guess that can be expanded on later in the series.
Overall, good stuff. Great puzzles, albeit easier than other entries, cool story moments despite being mostly filler, and good chase sequences for the most part apart from one of the new characters. No big final boss fight this time around which is a bit sadge. Solid 7/10 I'd give it. Definitely not the best entry, but it aint the worst either. Looking forward to the next entry. -

Not recommended Posted February 23, 2026 on Steam First things first, it's my own opinion and I hope people will read it to its fullest before anything else. (SPOILERS AHEAD): I love the franchise, since chapter 1 I was excited and couldn't contain my excitement when a new chapter would come out. You discover new characters, lore (really good lore btw) and more. But since chapter 4, it doesn't feel the same. And here on chapter 5, I was deeply frustrated and not into it. The beginning was good, going straight into being chased by Huggy was certainly a great choice to start the game with. But as you go through this chapter, it gets horribly long. It feels like a loop througout the whole game: Puzzles, chases, puzzles, chases, and a piece of lore to fill the story. I kept thinking "How many puzzles do I have to go through in order to just open a door and have another one to appear after this". It honestly made me bored to the point I kept sighing and rolling my eyes (which never happened before). Sometimes I couldn't understand what I was doing or what I had to do during the chases (in the Prototype's one and Lilly Lovebraids's one). Too confusing. I have to go through 7 STEPS in order to get rid of the poppy gel with my hand while trying to survive the Prototype/ I don't have a clue where I have to go when Lilly chases me in her house after the reveal of the Protoype. And when you keep dying because you genuinely don't know where you're supposed to go... It's infuriating. Chapter was 80% filled with puzzles and not so good chases than actual horror. Which leads me to the horror aspect. I couldn't find it. Sometimes I got stressed (like the beginning of the game for the chase) but because of all the frustration I accumulated from the enigmas and everything else, I wasn't scared nor stressed anymore. It was just a pain to play. I didn't get scared once. I did felt some disgust and surprise when I went through the place where Ms.Gracie brainwashed kids on a big screen that's for sure, and I did felt bad for the children and everything that happened to them (all the notes and tapes were amazing), but scared ? I wasn't. And because of all of this, when an important scene would show up, I was completely unfazed. The Prototype reveal unfazed me (I was happy to finally see it before playing it), the scene with Kissy and Huggy also unfazed me. If I didn't go through all the things I said above, I'm pretty sure I would've reacted differently and would've loved these. When you're near the end, it's also confusing. I got "killed" by the Protoype, pulled into poppy gel, get revived by Giblet, and walk as if nothing happened. Poppy is kidnapped AGAIN, we have to search for her AGAIN. Then we discover that Dr.Sawyer is here as well. For Sawyer, it's something I expected since he said in the previous chapter that his data was locked somewhere so deep, barely anyone could find it. But here we are on a cliffhanger and I'm afraid of what the next chapter will be about. There are still great things about the game don't get me wrong: The lore was really good. Huggy's memories, Ms.Gracie brainwashing kids/ her being LillyLovebraids, Ollie (I think it is) being the Prototype, the kids suffering the "bad toy box", all the surgery they had to go through and the failed experiments explained in tapes and document was amazing to listen to/ read. The little star on our wrist being able to play the tapes and making us continue walking and doing our task is also a great addition. Voice acting was peak, Protoype's design is dope, and you really understand why the Hour of Joy happened and it's completely deserved. But I don't think in terms of gameplay it's enjoyable. After finishing the chapter, all I kept saying was "FINALLY". I'm writting this the day after playing and I watched some people play the game instead of me doing it and I have to admit, it was better watching it then playing it. I could skip puzzles that I didn't like, and enjoy the important scenes and lore without having to go throught all that. It is a good franchise, they have a lot of good ideas and impeccable graphics/animations, but the gameplay and some sides of the game are getting tedious. I'm still hopping for a good chapter 6, but I'll watch instead of purchasing it. -
