Smite is the online battleground of the gods. Players choose from a diverse cast of deities and use their unique powers to triumph over the opposition in 5v5 team matches. Smite is a new take on the MOBA genre; rather than observing from above the action, the game’s third person perspective puts players into the thick of combat. Instead of clicking the mouse to move, players use the familiar WASD keys to move and fight their way through Smite’s dynamic battlegrounds.

Not recommended Posted June 3, 2025 on Steam I started playing this game when I was 16 years old, back when it wasn't even on Steam and had its own launcher. I can only imagine how many hours I had pre-steam... I am now almost 27 years old, and I am sad that the game has officially run its course. Mythology has always been an interest of mine, and as someone who stumbled into MOBAs as a kid... Smite was such a perfect combination of interests for me. When Smite 2 was announced, and they boasted on socials about their "generous" Legacy gem conversions... I knew it was done and dusted. Ultimate God Pack wasn't carrying over, 95%+ of skins were not transferring, and "legacy gems" was a nicely packaged way of pulling more money from players. It was a net loss in virtually every aspect of the game for long-time players, with the only benefit being a beautiful engine change and some mechanic changes (which many people aren't a fan of). The entire circumstance just sucks, honestly... Hi-Rez as a company has consistently proved themselves not on the side of their consumers. I don't expect them to be the Larian equivalent of MOBA devs, I understand it is a business and they intend to maximize profits for their shareholders (I won't even rant on that). But, what I do expect from companies I support is ethical business conduct, respect for their consumer base, and a genuine desire to collaborate with their community. And Hi-Rez has not done that, hence the games they end up shelving when they don't pan out how they hoped (Realm Royale, Paladins, etc). Hi-Rez is simply untrustworthy as a developer, it doesn't mean they are incapable of producing beautiful and enjoyable products. However, they are simply on the downward trajectory of the arc which is often characterized by greed, shilling, and releasing unfinished or refine products for money. I have no doubt that many of the designers, artists, and core team of Smite 2 love their game and are passionate about it. I sat and watched the numerous dev diary videos when Smite 2 was announced, saw the excitement in these people's eyes talking about Smite 2's potential. Sadly, like us (the consumers) they (the Smite 2 team) drew the short end of the stick via their leadership as well. I will not play Smite 2, I have to draw the line somewhere, and if my words and community frustration will not be heard then perhaps the lack of economic support will be. Who knows if it will ultimately matter, considering the conduct of late, but hey... if you stand for nothing, you fall for everything. Cheers! -
Recommended Posted April 11, 2026 on Steam It's been a good ride. Game's dying now and it's only a matter of time till they pull the plug on it. I wanted to show my appreciation for it while it's still up. Good times were had here. I used to think that it was silly calling the sequel "smite 2" as if it was a different game. But they're right, it is a different game. It's bad, and it lost whatever made the original fun. So I guess I'll hang around until I can no longer hang around. See its last breaths with my own eyes. And then find something else to fill the void. -
Not recommended Posted May 4, 2026 on Steam SMITE 1 will always be better than SMITE 2, and it hurts to say that because I genuinely love SMITE. I have over 9,000 hours across platforms in SMITE 1 and around 684 hours in SMITE 2, so this is not coming from someone who played two matches, lost, and review-bombed the game. I gave SMITE 2 a real chance. I wanted it to be good. I wanted it to feel like the future of the game I spent years playing. But SMITE 2 does not feel like the future. It feels like the reason the whole community got split in half. SMITE 1 had soul. It had years of gods, modes, skins, muscle memory, personality, and community history behind it. It was not perfect, but it felt complete. You could load in and know you were playing SMITE. The pacing, the builds, the gods, the modes, even the jank sometimes — it all had identity. SMITE 2 may look newer, but newer does not automatically mean better. SMITE 2 feels like a game that was pushed before it earned the right to replace SMITE 1. The transition felt forced, and instead of bringing the community together, it divided everyone. Some people stayed on SMITE 1 because that is where the content, comfort, and real game still are. Others moved to SMITE 2 because they felt like they had to if they wanted any kind of future support. Now both games feel weaker because the player base is split between them. That is the biggest failure here. Hi-Rez did not just release a sequel. They damaged the foundation that kept SMITE alive. SMITE 2 has some good ideas. I will give it that. Better graphics, smoother animations in some areas, and a fresh engine could have been a great starting point. But the actual experience does not feel better enough to justify what was lost. The game still feels unfinished, inconsistent, and weirdly empty compared to SMITE 1. Less content, less history, less personality, and not enough reason for longtime players to fully abandon the original. What makes it worse is the trust issue. Longtime players invested years into SMITE 1. Time, money, skins, mastery, memories, everything. Then SMITE 2 comes along and the whole thing starts feeling like a reset that nobody really asked for in this form. Instead of feeling rewarded for loyalty, it feels like the community was expected to just accept less and be grateful because it has a “2” in the title. That is why I hate SMITE 2 so much. Not because I hate SMITE. It is the opposite. I hate SMITE 2 because I love SMITE 1. SMITE 1 deserved better. The players deserved better. The community deserved a real upgrade, not a forced transition that left both games fighting over the same shrinking player base. Instead of building on what made SMITE special, Hi-Rez gambled everything on SMITE 2 and made longtime players feel abandoned. At this point, I honestly believe both games are in danger. SMITE 1 will slowly fade because it is no longer the priority. SMITE 2 will struggle because it has not earned the same loyalty SMITE 1 had. And the sad part is that none of this had to happen. They had a unique game with a loyal player base, and somehow still found a way to divide it, frustrate it, and make people question the future of the entire company. I do not want SMITE to die. That is why this is so frustrating. But if Hi-Rez keeps treating SMITE 2 like it automatically deserves to replace SMITE 1, while ignoring why people loved SMITE 1 in the first place, then they are going to lose the players who kept this game alive for years. SMITE 1 will always be better to me because it felt like a real game with a real soul. SMITE 2 feels like a business decision wearing SMITE’s name. -

Not recommended Posted July 17, 2025 on Steam I've spent over 10 years playing this game, all of my 20s. I honestly love everything about Smite's story and characters. I've played every role with every character over time, despite the horrible high-res decisions. The game was great, the player base has been very loyal over the years, and we know the game was made by very passionate people. Investing in other games that never succeeded and abandoning Smite was the biggest failure here. The game didn't die because it was pay-to-win or had bad mechanics; it died because the developer didn't invest enough—the same problem with Paladins. The final move was to kill this game in favor of Smite 2, which definitely didn't bring back the player base and has horrible numbers. It's a shame, rest in peace. -
Not recommended Posted June 27, 2025 on Steam So I have played this game for 10 years, spent lots of money on it, and feel I have a good grip on a well rounded review as Ive been present for its hype, its community, and now its downfall as theres now only 2,000 people playing this game a day now (dead community). Let me put it to you this way......if you had access to play with all Pokemon cards, and then the publishers abandoned that game to prefer a new game with only a handful of Pokemon cards to play with - YOURE NOT GOING TO PLAY. I wanted to put it in that context and that metaphor - why play with 10 pokemon cards when you can play with over 100??? Thats exactly what happened to Smite. They have like over 100 gods to play with in Smite 1, the game creators announced they will not be doing anything for Smite 1 anymore then came out with Smite 2 with less than half the Gods theres only like 45 characters - and whats worse........is that now they split their own community. So everyone who wants more characters is still playing Smite 1, and everyone who is going for a brighter game play (it honestly candidly hurts my eyes) went to Smite 2. So they effectively destroyed their own community. I just have to say Lore is a big reason why people came to Smite instead of League of Legends or Dota. People who play The Witcher games or Pokemon, or Hogwarts Legacy - Lore is still a huge huge part of gaming. I know everyone elses comments will focus on functionality - but I wanted my comment to highlight Lore. Also one functionality item I will mention is there are more modes to play in Smite 1 than Smite 2 -and all the money you spend on Gems to buy cool looking skins will not transfer over to Smite 2 who don't even offer cool skins. So you're stuck with all the gems you purchased for skins..... on a game they have now announced will no longer be designing for. I think this review is fair. I loved this game for years. But it is dead right now. Smite also always had an upper hand too from League of Legends when it came to skill. League of Legends is a point and click game, where as Smite you had to have real skill (think mario cart driving a car, constantly moving bobbing and weaving making a difference in winning or losing) to get kills or survive. It was so much more skill driven and was not a point and click situation - so its a shame the game makers effectively made a bad business decision and didnt make Smite 1 even more incredible with more Gods. I said this comment would be fair and I really think it is - but when Games come out with a second game they usually have a really awesome cool new element to it like Assassins Creed Odyssey, or Runescape Dragonwilds - you dont come out with the exact same game with less than 50% of characters and even fewer game modes.
